Kaiaua Public Conveniences

We need to talk about public conveniences in Kaiaua

In 2019, we asked for your feedback on our plans for a parking area at the Kaiaua end of the Hauraki Rail Trail north of Kaiaua township.

At that time, our plans included day and overnight parking areas with natural landscaping, picnic areas and a toilet and shower facility.

Quite a bit of time has passed since these plans were finalised so we’ve given them a final once over before we start work on the project. After completing this review, we think having a public toilet and shower facility in the area near the pirate ship playground makes more sense than putting them in the overnight parking area.

This is because they would be accessible to more people there, including users of the playground, visitors to the Pink Store, boat ramp users and travellers stopping to stretch their legs. There is also more space to plant screening plants to help the facility blend into the natural landscape. We would still provide day and overnight parking areas, natural landscaping and picnic areas in the original location.

It would only be a short walk for people staying or picnicking in the overnight parking area to use the toilets and shower in the pirate ship playground area.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts | Ngā manaakitanga mō ōu Koutou whakaaro

We received feedback from more than 80 people through our online survey, social media, community drop-in session, letters and emails.

Overall, we heard that you think having public toilets in the area near the pirate ship playground makes more sense than putting them in the overnight parking area at the Kaiaua end of the Hauraki Rail Trail north of Kaiaua township.

We agree this is the best spot because it would be accessible to more people, including users of the playground, visitors to the Pink Store, and travellers stopping to stretch their legs. There is also more space to plant screening plants to help the facility blend into the natural landscape. It would only be a short walk for people staying or picnicking in the overnight parking area to use it.

Review of all public toilets in the Kaiaua township in 2022

We’ll do a review of all public toilets in the Kaiaua township in 2022 to make sure they’re fit for purpose.

We heard loud and clear that you don’t want public conveniences in the overnight parking area north of Kaiaua. Other feedback considered as part of the decision making included some requests for other options, such as having public toilets at two sites to cater for visitors and locals. The possiblity of reopening the public toilets toilets in the area near the boat club was also raised. The toilets in the boat club area are permanently closed to the public because the site is wāhi tapu.

All going to plan

We’ll start getting the site ready for the new public conveniences in June and all going to plan they’ll be ready in time for summer

You told us what you think | Kua kōrero mai koe ōu whakaaro, tēnā rawa atu koe

We considered your feedback at a meeting in May and decided that the new public convenience facility should be located near the Pirate Playground in Kaiaua.

This is so they would be accessible to more people there, including users of the playground, visitors to the Pink Store, boat ramp users and travellers stopping to stretch their legs. There is also more space to plant screening plants to help the facility blend into the natural landscape. We would still provide day and overnight parking areas, natural landscaping and picnic areas in the original location.

The opportunity to provide written feedback has now closed.
