Kaiaua Public Conveniences

OPEN

Hey, we need to talk about public conveniences in Kaiaua

In 2019, we asked for your feedback on our plans for a parking area at the Kaiaua end of the Hauraki Rail Trail north of Kaiaua township.

At that time, our plans included day and overnight parking areas with natural landscaping, picnic areas and a toilet and shower facility.

Quite a bit of time has passed since these plans were finalised so we’ve given them a final once over before we start work on the project. After completing this review, we think having a public toilet and shower facility in the area near the pirate ship playground makes more sense than putting them in the overnight parking area.

This is because they would be accessible to more people there, including users of the playground, visitors to the Pink Store, boat ramp users and travellers stopping to stretch their legs. There is also more space to plant screening plants to help the facility blend into the natural landscape. We would still provide day and overnight parking areas, natural landscaping and picnic areas in the original location.

It would only be a short walk for people staying or picnicking in the overnight parking area to use the toilets and shower in the pirate ship playground area.

We want to know what you think

Should we build the toilet and shower facility at the overnight parking area as originally planned, or does it make more sense to build them in the pirate ship playground area?

The options:

Location 1 –overnight parking area north of Kaiaua township
  • Accessible to overnight campers
  • Not as accessible for general use due to their location north of the township
  • Less room for screening plants to help blend into the natural landscape
  • Part of the original plan we asked for feedback on

Or

Location 2 – pirate ship playground
  • Accessible to more people, including users of the playground, visitors to the Pink Store, and travellers stopping to stretch their legs.
  • More space to plant screening plants to help the facility blend into the natural landscape
  • It would only be a short walk for people staying or picnicking in the parking area to use the toilets and shower in the pirate ship playground area.
